New People 3.0

New People 3.0 is a fifteen minute performative experiment and the result of several months research into performativity as social practice. It was the utopian wish to create an ensemble dance work using sustainable and healthy ways of collaborating: an experiment which ultimately failed.

New People 3.0 is about the hunger to be strangers to the old ways of working and to our own corporal archives, foreign to our hierarchies, new comers to our own habits, a way to search for a beginning.

Performers: Bénédicte Billiet, Tsai-Wei Tien, Breanna O’Mara and Julie Shanahan

Concept and direction: Gala Moody/Michael Carter

Collaboration: Marc Wagenbach

Music: Various artists

Set and lighting concept: OFEN Co-Arts Platform

New People 3.0 premiered 29.11.2019 at Schauspielhaus Wuppertal as part of Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch’s Underground VII.

A co-production by OFEN Co-Arts Platform and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, supported by Ekeby International Research Center for Contemporary Arts in the Netherlands.

Westdeustche Zeitung (translated from German)

It seethes behind the facade of the human being, it screams, rages, cries and laughs. It forces its way out, even though this is precisely what the directorial team is trying to prevent. By commanding the four figures (Bénédicte Billiet, Tsai-Wei Tien, Brenna O’Mara and Julie Shanahan) in their shapeless costumes. They chastise them and then ask if they are comfortable. Which is visibly not the case, oppressive and amusing at the same time. Cie.OFEN (Gala Moody and Michael Carter) see their choreographing as social practice. “New People 3.0” was born out of the utopian desire to work together in dance in a sustainable and holistic way; the experiment failed. The audience likes it.
